Haïti - Message from the SI Club Port au Prince
12th February 2010,
It has been a month since the earthquake and we still haven’t finished counting the dead – 217,000 according to the latest report, many of them still under the rubble. Our beloved Port-au-Prince has been completely destroyed, as has the surrounding area and other cities such as Leogane and Petit –Goaves, etc. There are so many people who are homeless in a country as poor as ours. We are completely at a loss, wondering where to start. When will we know where, how and when to begin rebuilding, and - the crucial question - with what? We have received extraordinary international support – generous countries have been helping us right from the 13th January, the day after the earthquake; MEDICAL TEAMS with their hospitals, and provisions of food and water, and rescue teams to help us get the survivors out from under the rubble. We would like to take this opportunity to thank them. We must also emphasise the great solidarity shown by the people of Haiti; we have been struggling to save as many people as possible.
One month on, with our homeless people taking refuge in makeshift camps, and countless people wounded in the flesh and in spirit, our disabled people, we the Soroptimists have decided to take part in rebuilding a school and we are counting on support from our sister Soroptimists. We would like to take this opportunity to show you some pictures of the disaster, while sparing you images of the dead and wounded.
In order to respond to the urgent needs of the women in the camps, we have chosen to supply them with hygiene kits as soon as possible.
