Five-O

Exit from Project Five-O

Dear All

After many years of deliberation and concerns expressed by Federations and clubs the SI Board made a decision in 2008 to withdraw from the FIVE-0 partnerships. The reason for this decision included strains on financial and personnel resources. Following this mandate I prepared an exit strategy which included a proposal and discussion paper for the other FIVE-0 partners. One of our main concerns was that money raised for projects (almost totally donated by SI) should only be used for projects.

At the Annual International FIVE-0 Meeting on February 27 and 28, 2009, we had a very frank, open and positive conversation and the following conclusions were determined:

  • SI is no longer a member of FIVE-O and will consequently not pay the 2009 dues to Project Five-O due on 1st May.
  • SI is no longer a fund raising partner for FIVE-0: consequently donations will no longer be processed by Federations and SI.
  • The remaining money, about $100,000 USD will go to projects–primarily to existing projects’ support.
  • SI encourages clubs and UN Reps to continue collaborative partnerships with other organizations including our Five-O partners.
  • The SI Project Five-OLiaison will communicate with the clubs involved in FIVE-0 projects to ensure that the projects continue.
  • SI clubs participating in local Five-0 projects are urged to continue their support.
  • The following organizations will continue with Project FIVE-0 and retain the name Project FIVE-0: Business and Professional Women International, and International Council of Women. They are in the process of seeking other partners.
  • The following organizations have also left Project FIVE-0 in addition to SI: Zonta International (effective June 2008) and International Federation of University Women (effective 28 February 2009)
  • Soroptimist International will continue to provide transition support and assistance to the new leadership until the end of 2009 if necessary.

At the start of a new Soroptimist year, there are two points I want you to be involved with and take action for: one is the question from Five-O about financing for gender equality the other is the President’s Appeal Restoring Dignity.

Five-O is the collaboration of the five large(st) international women’s organizations, now four.

  • Business and Professional Women International
  • International Council of Women
  • International Federation of University Women
  • Soroptimist International
All those partners have the same aim: to strive for a better world for women.
The combined strength of those four important organisations can create fantastic opportunities

President’s Appeal 2007 Restoring Dignity

Download this leaflet in pdf.

We, in Europe, where good medical and obstetrical care are a certainty, do not dare to think how a happy event like giving birth can end in the nightmare of having a fistula.
Just try to imagine how YOU should feel if everybody rejects and shuns you, if YOU have to leave your family and live in shame.
As women and mothers it is our duty to help those women and mothers of Ethiopia to regain their dignity and secure a future.

The International President Margaret Lobo asks not much form us in her appeal: just some money so that Dr Hamlin and her team can continue to treat the victims of fistula’s and support the Desta Mender Village. It is a place to live for the women who cannot be completely cured where they receive ongoing medical care and where they are taught various skills so that they can become self-sufficient.

Do not buy the latest electronic gadget or book or handbag or face cream, give the money to the President’s Appeal and make a difference for a woman in Addis Ababa.

Be aware, get involved, take action

In warm Soroptimist Friendship
