Sample project To encourage the development of female-run small businesses in rural Armenia, members of SI Club Yerevan launched the ‘Alleviate the economic situation of the women in Tsolag village’ project.

They provided a group of women with practical skills, infrastructure and microfinance loans to help set them on the path to financial independence.

With the support of the mayor of Yerevan, a building was renovated to serve as a workshop. After carefully evaluating available options for quality and affordability, the Soroptimists purchased four sewing machines, a carpet loom and all the supplies and materials required for sewing and weaving. Fourteen women are now producing carpets and bed linen, and reinvesting their profits in the project. SI Yerevan is also assisting the women with marketing and in selling their products.

The positive effects extend even beyond the active participants: it is estimated that a further 80 of Tsolag’s women also benefit indirectly from the project.
