About this project Although girls in the Muhanga region are often denied access to schooling, the local Soroptimist Club is giving them the tools to acquire craftsmanship skills.

This training offers them the chance to develop a career and lift themselves out of poverty.

The project began in 2013 and, so far, 180 girls have been trained in knitting techniques and learned how to produce items of clothing such as socks, bras and scarves. Some 30 girls are currently enrolled.

After completing the 6-month course, some of the students have gone on to set up their own knitting workshops, while others have found work in local companies. With a career and stable employment, the women can join their local health insurance scheme and support themselves, thus ensuring that they do not fall into juvenile delinquency and homelessness.
