About this project Roughly three million Syrian refugees currently live in and around camps in Turkey. The children need a future and the best way to help them is to provide access to education and to ensure a safe environment.

More than 80 Soroptimist clubs in the Netherlands are involved in collecting money for the ‘Syria: Back to School’ project and in raising awareness about the situation of Syrian children. Originally, the aim was to raise €300,000 between April 2014 and December 2016, but by April 2016 the clubs had already reached their target!

In partnership with UNICEF NL, Dutch Soroptimists are offering these children hope for a better future through schooling. The classes are run in shipping containers a short distance from the refugee camps. Thanks to the Soroptimist support, these ‘schools’ are equipped with the necessary furniture and school supplies. With these basic resources more than 10,000 Syrian-speaking teachers are receiving the necessary training to cope with all the special needs of the refugee children.
