Dear Soroptimists,

In these dreadful times of a Global Health Emergency, we have to stay at home. For us home is a shelter, a safe place, but it is not the same for all women. Many of them are confined with their oppressors, with no escape possible, they are more vulnerable than ever. Many, especially the elderly, are left alone and need help.

We must Stand up for Women, especially during and after virus restrictions.

We must advocate and take actions calling states to implement their legal obligations to shelter and protect women who experience domestic violence and are forced to live with their violent spouses. Also women in prisons where they can’t keep the safe distance, women at risk of poverty while the economy is shut down and after the virus, when it would have shrunk significantly.

Now, there’s time to use our professional skills, our global voice for women affected by the virus who need psychological assistance, legal and business advice, as well as educational help. Sometimes they need our specialized knowledge and skills, and sometimes what is simply needed is a kind word, a smile, assistance for shopping or listening to soothe anxieties.

Let’s look around and think how we can help others because we do Stand Up for Women.
