Soroptimists of Yerevan Build Skills and Hope

The Soroptimists of Yerevan have recently completed a powerful initiative aimed at empowering displaced women from Nagorno-Karabakh and rural areas of Armenia. In partnership with the “Bari Mama” centre in Yerevan, they launched an innovative empowerment camp designed to equip women with vocational and entrepreneurial skills to rebuild their lives with dignity and independence.

Motivated by their long-standing work with vulnerable women, and in response to the devastating effects of the 2020 and 2023 conflicts in Karabakh, the Soroptimists focused on restoring confidence and economic opportunity for women affected by war, loss, and displacement. Many had lost their homes, loved ones, and livelihoods. Low self-esteem and isolation further hindered their ability to restart.

Twenty-three women were selected to participate in the programme, which included practical training in project development, entrepreneurship, and vocational skills such as beekeeping, baking, cosmetology, and carpet weaving. The most promising project proposals received grant awards, and with the support of the Soroptimists and trainers, eight women were able to launch their own small businesses.

The impact was deeply personal:

Siroun Balayan, a nurse-turned-baker, said: “I received a professional oven and mixer and now run a small home-based bakery. This initiative gave me purpose and helped support my family.”

Milena Sargsyan, a displaced carpet weaver, shared: “I regained hope. The weaving loom I received allowed me to start creating again. I now dream of teaching others and expanding my work.”

By the project’s end, eight women had launched small businesses, and others had taken concrete steps toward independence. The Club plans to expand the programme reaching more women in need.

As the Soroptimists of Yerevan remind us: “Education and skills are the only things that cannot be stolen.” This initiative reflects the heart of Soroptimist values—empowering women through action, compassion, and long-term impact.
