What it is and where to get more information

CSW stands for “Commission on the Status of Women”. It is a functional commission of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations. SI and SIE have consultative status with ECOSOC. Before the pandemic, every year in March, Soroptimists, together with about 5.000 other NGO members and representatives of UN member states used to travel to New York in order to attend a two-week session of the CSW. Last March, due to COVID, the event was completely online.

From 14 to 25 of March 2022, the 66th session of the CSW will take place. It will again be an online event. In 2021 there have been about 25.000 participants. This enormous interest in the CSW has encouraged UN Women to organize it again online. Please, find more information about the CSW here.

Each year, there is a priority theme, and a review theme. In 2022, the priority theme will be “Achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls in the context of climate change, environmental and disaster risk reduction policies and programmes”. The review theme will look at “Women’s economic empowerment in the changing world of work”.

Those topics are very important for us all, for our programme work and for our advocacy campaigns. You are all invited to join the event. Listen to speakers from all over the world on the advancement of women’s status in those two areas of concern.

Though you cannot register yet for the event, you can already receive information by registering here for the mailing list.

In addition to the UN CSW, there is the NGO CSW Forum. It is the civil society side of the CSW and is a very valuable source of information for NGOs. I very much recommend their site, and especially their FAQs. They answer most questions you might have about the CSW.

SI will provide three training webinars. For us Europeans they will most probably be in the evenings of January 29, February 19 and March 5. You will get more detailed information once it is available.

Stay tuned and join us for the CSW66, it is such an inspiring event!
