Domestic violence – a social scourge to combatMap of projects
Violence against women and intra-family violence are very shocking in French Polynesia, the numbers are alarming with 917 victims of domestic violence in 2018, there is still twice as much violence in Polynesian households than in mainland France.
For the Soroptimists of Papeete in Tahiti, preventing and combating all of this violence is a priority, resulting particularly in strengthening prevention and awareness-raising mechanisms for the whole of society in collaboration with the professionals concerned.
The Soroptimists hosted an evening with the screening of a thematic film “On the Basis of Sex”, followed by a debate on violence against women and girls bringing together important local actors and the population. The discussions were rich and fruitful. All profits from the screening went to local associations combating violence against women!
This project has been truly successful. Indeed, it is considered a great way to advocate for the human rights of women and girls – if only because of the massive media coverage it has received locally!
