The Council of Europe extended its call for nominations for the Václav Havel Human Rights Prize 2017 until the 30th of June.

The Václav Havel Human Rights Prize rewards outstanding civil society action in the defense of human rights in Europe and beyond. Awarded with a sum of €60 000, it is open to nominations from any individual, non-governmental organisation or institution working to defend human rights. Deadline for nominations has been extended to 30 June.

Last year, the Unions of the Netherlands, France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany had together submitted the nomination of Jennie Vanlerberghe from Mothers for Peace. As the SIE representative to the Council of Europe I was very proud that five Unions of SIE had taken the initiative to present a very strong candidate.

 

In 2016, the Prize was awarded to Nadia Murad, a young Yazidi woman who had been enslaved by Daech.
