Across Europe, Soroptimists came together on 21 September, joining the global observance of the International Day of Peace under the Soroptimist theme “Peace Needs Women.” With determination and solidarity, members transformed this global call into visible action, sending the statement to EU politicians and International Human Rights Institutions.
Through creative actions and community engagement, Soroptimists highlighted women’s essential role in promoting peace and protecting human dignity. Here are two inspiring examples:
The Netherlands: "SOS - Support Our Sisters"
In the Netherlands, Soroptimists united under the banner “SOS – Support Our Sisters.” Clubs across the country stood together, in silence and in presence, to express solidarity with women living in fear, facing conflict-related sexual violence, or struggling to survive amid war.
From Amsterdam to Zwolle, the message of peace was made by poetry readings and open discussions on healing and resilience. In Scheveningen, Soroptimists met by the statue of the fisherman’s wife, gazing out to sea with hope for her loved ones to return, a symbol of all women waiting for peace. In Zeist, therapist Nadja Vos spoke about intergenerational war trauma, while in Zwolle, members met women who had fled violence to share stories of survival and the meaning of peace.
The Dutch Soroptimists’ campaign echoed one clear conviction: where violence reigns, women know how to rebuild; together, women can make peace.
Poland: "Peace Starts With Me"
Meanwhile, in Poland, Soroptimists launched the campaign “Peace Starts With Me”, spreading messages of peace across the nation.
From 10 September, clubs shared daily quotes from inspiring women and men on social media, encouraging reflection and dialogue.
Members created paper doves carrying messages like “Peace starts with me because…” and placed them in public spaces to inspire others. They also presented peace dove pins to notable figures, organised a children’s art contest and exhibition, and held club discussions on how peace begins with everyday actions and the words we use.
Women Leading the Way to Peace
These campaigns reflect the strength, creativity, and compassion of Soroptimists united for peace. Together, they demonstrate a simple but powerful truth: when women stand together, their voices can make a world of difference.
