The story of your project

Please summarise your project in some sentences:

Making cultural events accessible to everyone: hearing people, oral deaf people, and sign language users. The show raises awareness about the experiences of deaf people.

Why did your club/union choose to do this project?

Accessibility measures are costly, yet this project aims to include everyone despite the expense.

It seeks to create encounters between “worlds” that rarely meet, raise awareness of the violence and inequalities experienced by deaf people, and promote multi-dimensional inclusion.

How did you implement this project? What concrete actions did you take to tackle the issue you mentioned in the previous question?

Search for sponsors.

Did you encounter any problems in organising or running your project?

Yes. Multi-accessibility requires the involvement of several organisations (sign-language interpreters, LPC professionals, subtitling, etc.).

How did you solve this problem? What did your club/union learn form solving these problems that you would like to share with others Soroptimists who might find themselves in the same situation?

We contacted the various organisations involved (oral deaf and sign-language communities, etc.).

We discovered the complexity of the world of deaf and hard-of-hearing people.

Funding was sought through sponsors and the King Baudouin Foundation.

Did the members of your club/union consider this project a success?

The project is still ongoing.

Supporting material

Céline, who is profoundly deaf: Sees the realization of a dream that is the embodiment of multi-faceted cultural
accessibility. Very often, only one type of translation is provided (either a magnetic loop or sign language interpretation,
etc.). She sees this project as an opportunity to bring together hearing people, deaf people, and people with hearing
impairments.
