“We for You, You for Us” – Bringing Joy, Health and Connection to Seniors in Bratislava

In Slovakia, many seniors, particularly elderly women, face loneliness and isolation, often living in retirement homes with limited opportunities for social or cultural engagement. With women representing the majority of the elderly population, issues such as declining health, financial insecurity, and social invisibility weigh heavily on their quality of life[i]. Against this backdrop, the Soroptimist of Bratislava launched the heartwarming project “We for You, You for Us”, supported by the City of Bratislava.

Perfectly aligned with Soroptimist values of solidarity and empowerment, the initiative aimed to bring joy, promote health awareness, and strengthen social bonds among seniors, especially women in care facilities.

Over seven months, the Slovak Soroptimist organised 11 activities across four senior homes in the capital, reaching about 300 seniors, nearly 90% of whom were women. The programme included sports tournaments, musical and literary events, and medical lectures on vision and hearing health. Students from the Academy of Art and Soroptimist doctors took part, creating meaningful intergenerational exchanges and providing valuable health advice.

Each visit brought smiles, movement, and renewed vitality. One unforgettable moment came when a 94-year-old former prima ballerina spontaneously danced for an hour during a concert, radiating joy and inspiring everyone present.

The Soroptimist of Bratislava have a long-standing commitment to supporting seniors, having organised similar projects in previous years. Their consistent dedication embodies the Soroptimist mission: to improve the lives of women and girls through practical action and friendship.

Funded with €3,400, including €400 contributed by the Club, the project represented over 500 hours of volunteer work, with strong support from city authorities and heartfelt appreciation from senior home staff.

Beyond its joyful activities, this project served as a reminder of the power of connection, compassion, and dignity — helping older women feel seen, valued, and included. It stands as a moving example of how Soroptimist values can transform everyday life, one act of kindness at a time.

Encouraged by this success, the Slovak Soroptimist plan to continue nurturing these connections, ensuring that every woman, at every age, has the chance to grow, lead, and thrive with trust.
