Artificial Intelligence and Women’s Rights: Empowering Women Through Education and Action

The Soroptimists in Germany implemented the initiative “Focus on Artificial Intelligence and Health – Opportunities for Women in the Digital World”, as part of the broader campaign “Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Women’s Rights.” The project reached around 500 women across Germany and placed education at the centre of digital empowerment.

Artificial intelligence is rapidly influencing professional life, healthcare, political participation and social structures. Yet women remain underrepresented in the development, governance and ethical framing of AI, resulting in gender bias, data gaps and unequal outcomes. The Soroptimists recognised the urgency of addressing these challenges while also highlighting the opportunities AI can offer women and girls.

The project was implemented through a coordinated, multi-level approach. At local level, Soroptimist clubs organised lectures and discussions that translated complex AI concepts into everyday realities, focusing on topics such as unconscious bias in AI systems, women’s participation in decision-making, and the impact of AI on work and power structures. These educational activities strengthened digital literacy and encouraged critical reflection.

SI Germany

At regional level, a Rhine-Neckar think tank was established to connect expertise, foster collaboration and develop strategic perspectives. Workshops and annual meetings explored AI in relation to women’s health, political participation and the gender data gap, reinforcing learning through exchange and innovation.

At national level, AI was integrated into programme work, leadership development and forward-looking strategy through workshops, webinars and publications. This ensured broad knowledge transfer and intergenerational learning across the Soroptimist network.

The initiative was widely regarded as a success. It strengthened awareness, competence and confidence among participants, and positioned Soroptimist International Germany as a proactive and informed voice on AI and women’s rights. Above all, it demonstrated how education empowers women to actively shape technological change in line with Soroptimist values.
