Determined to prevent other families from experiencing the same tragedy, the Soroptimists of Walcourt Rive des Lacs transformed personal loss into a powerful awareness and advocacy campaign.
Convinced that information can save lives, the Club developed an educational programme aimed at increasing awareness of MTSS among young people, families, educators and healthcare professionals. Through presentations in schools and public conferences, participants learn about the symptoms of MTSS, prevention measures, menstrual health and the importance of seeking medical attention without delay.
To support these activities, the Soroptimists created a comprehensive set of educational resources, including French and Dutch leaflets, posters for school bathrooms, a comic strip illustrated by a young MTSS survivor and a dedicated social media platform. The programme is often delivered alongside a paediatrician and women who have personally experienced MTSS, combining medical expertise with powerful first-hand testimonies. The project also addresses the persistent taboos surrounding menstruation. By engaging both girls and boys in open discussions, it promotes greater understanding and helps normalise conversations about menstrual health.
Beyond awareness-raising, the initiative has developed a strong policy engagement dimension. Working with a Member of Parliament, the Soroptimists are calling for legislative changes regarding internal menstrual products and for improved monitoring of MTSS cases to strengthen prevention and public health responses.
The impact of the project is already evident. The Club has received messages from young women who recognised symptoms thanks to the information provided and sought medical help in time.
Through education, public awareness efforts and the courage to speak openly about a difficult subject, the Soroptimists of Walcourt Rive des Lacs are ensuring that Maelle’s story continues to protect and empower others. What began as a personal tragedy has become a movement that is helping to save lives.
