A Bench, A QR Code, A Lifeline: Violence Has No Place in Steyr

A Bench, A QR Code, A Lifeline: Violence Has No Place in Steyr

Violence often remains hidden behind closed doors. Shame, fear and uncertainty about where to seek help prevent many victims from accessing the support they need.

Determined to make assistance more visible and accessible, the Soroptimists of Steyr launched Park Benches – Violence Has No Place in Steyr, an innovative awareness-raising initiative that brings information directly into public spaces.

The project began with a simple but powerful idea: transform everyday park benches into visible symbols of solidarity and support. Working closely with the City of Steyr and local partners, the Soroptimists installed hundreds of orange metal plaques bearing the message “Violence Has No Place in Steyr” and a QR code linking directly to support services.

With a single scan, victims, concerned relatives or members of the public can access information on helplines and specialised organisations offering immediate assistance. To ensure accessibility for diverse communities, the information is available not only in German but also in eleven additional languages.

Beyond providing practical support, the initiative encourages public dialogue and helps break the silence surrounding violence. By placing the message in parks, streets and other communal areas, the campaign reinforces a clear community-wide commitment to zero tolerance for violence against women and all forms of abuse.

What started as a local Soroptimist initiative quickly gained momentum. The project’s visibility and simplicity inspired neighbouring municipalities to join the campaign and adopt the same message, significantly extending its reach throughout the region.

Reaching an estimated 100,000 people, Park Benches – Violence Has No Place in Steyr demonstrates how a small but highly visible intervention can create meaningful social impact. Through collaboration, innovation and advocacy, the Soroptimists of Steyr have transformed public spaces into places of awareness, support and hope, reminding every passer-by that violence should never be ignored and that help is always within reach.
