The European Commission presented a letter of intent, followed by an announcement of the preparation of a new comprehensive legislation regarding Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence.

 

The European Union (EU) signed the Istanbul Convention in June 2017 signaling the intention to become a party to it. All EU Member States have signed and 21 of them have become parties to the Convention.

 

The EU accession to the Istanbul Convention remains a priority.

 

The legislative proposal to prevent and combat specific forms of gender-based violence is being followed by a process of consultations, to hear the concerns of citizens, NGOs, stakeholders.

 

Soroptimist International of Europe has taken a stand, answering the online questionnaire and presenting a position paper. We congratulate the legislative intention and listed the main concerns.
