About this project In late 2014, Lativian Soroptimists from SI Club Ogre-Ķegums launched ‘Palīdzēsim māmiņai’ (‘Let Us Help Mothers’) at a day-care centre in Ķegums.

Twice a week, disabled children are given Montessori development classes under the supervision of qualified teachers. In the playroom, pre-school children (0-7 years) and their parents play together, while primary school children (7-10 years) learn on their own – by playing, reading, watching cartoons, drawing and colouring.

The project was realised with the help of a grant from the Soroptimist International of Europe Action Fund. It was co-funded by Ķegums town council and the members of SI Ogre-Ķegums, largely through charity auctions and personal contributions. In addition, a number of donations – nursery furnishings, chairs, indoor plants, stationery, toys and children’s books – were received from Latvian charity organisations. Furniture, carpets, a TV and Montessori toys and teaching materials were purchased with the funds provided.

For future editions of the project a number of thematic events are planned. These will include creative workshops for children and parents, lectures and consultations with a paediatrician.
