Turning Awareness into Action: The Endo Education Initiative

Turning Awareness into Action: The Endo Education Initiative

Endometriosis is a chronic and often misunderstood condition that affects the daily lives, health and future prospects of many women and girls. Despite its prevalence, awareness remains limited, particularly among young people and within educational environments. In response to this need, the Soroptimists of Austurland launched the Endo Education project, aiming to improve understanding of endometriosis and foster a more supportive environment for those affected.

Initiated in 2025, the project focuses on delivering education on endometriosis across primary and secondary schools in East Iceland. The initiative was developed in close collaboration with the Endo Association, whose expertise ensured that accurate and age-appropriate information reached students. Through this partnership, the Icelandic Soroptimists contributed both financially and organisationally to support a structured awareness programme across the region.

The project was inspired by personal testimony within the club. One member shared her daughter’s experience of living with endometriosis, highlighting not only the physical pain associated with the condition but also the emotional toll and the challenges of being misunderstood within both school and healthcare systems. This story resonated with many members and reinforced the urgent need to improve awareness and understanding.

To address this, the Soroptimists of Austurland supported the Endo Association in extending its educational outreach beyond the Reykjavík area. The project included school-based sessions providing students with clear information about symptoms, diagnosis and the impact of the condition on everyday life. In addition, an open meeting for the wider community was co-organised, creating a space for dialogue and further awareness among the general public.

The initiative reached approximately 750 beneficiaries, including students and members of the local community. Feedback indicated that the educational sessions had a meaningful impact, with many students continuing conversations at home and raising awareness within their families.

The project was funded through dedicated fundraising efforts, including the production and sale of reindeer pâté and the organisation of a book market, raising over €6,800. With strong community engagement and the commitment of Soroptimist members, the initiative demonstrated how local action can address gaps in health education.

By promoting knowledge, understanding and open discussion, the Soroptimists of Austurland have contributed to breaking the silence surrounding endometriosis and supporting a more informed and empathetic society.
