Women Leading Green Futures

Women Leading Green Futures

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time, but it is not gender neutral. Around the world, women and girls are often disproportionately affected by environmental degradation, extreme weather events, food insecurity and poverty. Yet despite these challenges, women are not only victims of climate change, they are leaders, innovators and essential actors in building sustainable futures.

A webinar to mark World Environment Day

To mark World Environment Day, celebrated annually on 5 June, the SIE Programme and Advocacy Teams are organising a webinar on 4 June 2026 aligned with the Soroptimist International theme under the Strategic Pillar of Environmental Sustainability: “Women Leading Green Futures.”

The webinar will showcase how women and girls are leading environmental action through education, advocacy and community initiatives, while highlighting inspiring Soroptimist projects from across our Federation. It will also demonstrate how project reporting strengthens advocacy efforts at Soroptimist International and United Nations level.

Why women’s leadership matters for environment

Women play a crucial role in shaping behaviours, educating future generations and driving change at local level. When women are informed, empowered and included in decision-making, environmental action becomes more effective, inclusive and sustainable.

Soroptimists in action: inspiring projects across Europe

Across our Federation, Soroptimists are already demonstrating this leadership in practice.

In Türkiye, Soroptimists organised a climate awareness panel at Istanbul Technical University to address the specific impact of climate change on women and to encourage women’s participation in environmental dialogue and advocacy. The project recognised that women’s voices and expertise must be part of climate solutions.

  •  In Norway, women were placed at the centre of local climate resilience discussions through the KRED initiative, bringing together communities, researchers and decision-makers to develop sustainable and inclusive responses to environmental challenges.

  • In Germany, Soroptimists supported older women living in poverty by improving access to public transport. Beyond sustainable mobility, the project reinforced women’s independence, dignity and active participation in society.

  • In Sweden, Soroptimists showed how women can lead environmental change through everyday actions and conscious lifestyle choices, inspiring their families and communities to adopt more sustainable habits.

These projects remind us that sustainability is not only about protecting the environment. It is also about equality, participation and empowerment. Women must not only be included in climate discussions, but they must also help lead them.

Global perspectives: a keynote on advocacy at the United Nations

Our webinar will also feature a keynote by Pascale Muylaert, SI representative UN at Geneva, who will share insights on global advocacy and the importance of women’s voices in environmental decision-making.

Building a greener, fairer future, together

Together, Soroptimists are helping build a greener, fairer and more sustainable future, led by women.
