Meet Zara Janibekyan, SIE Assistant Programme Director

"Empowered women empower systems, families, and shape healthier societies"

What is your vision for serving on the SIE Board 2026-2027?

My motivation for serving on the SIE Board comes from a deep commitment to strengthening communities and advancing opportunities for women and vulnerable groups. I believe that effective leadership can create sustainable social impact. Through my service, I aim to contribute my experience in public health, education, and empowerment initiatives to help shape inclusive and resilient programs. This role allows me to advocate for initiatives that empower women, improve wellbeing, and foster stronger, healthier communities.

What is your vision for a better world?

I envision a world where every woman and girl is valued, healthy, educated, and empowered to shape her own future.

To move closer to this vision, we must:

  • Expand opportunities for women’s leadership and economic participation.
  • Advocate for women’s rights, education, and health.
  • Build partnerships across sectors to ensure sustainable and inclusive development.

During this biennium, I aim to:

  • Advance initiatives that improve women’s health, wellbeing, and social inclusion.
  • Support programs that educate and empower young people to adopt healthy lifestyles.
  • Strengthen community-based services and family support systems.
  • Advocate for women equity, dignity, and access to essential services.
  • Contribute to building strong partnerships and sustainable impact through collaborative leadership.

What do you do to stay motivated in your work?

I stay motivated by remembering the people behind the work. My motivation is also rooted in purpose. I believe that serving others, strengthening communities, and creating opportunities for women is not just professional work, it is a responsibility and a calling. Staying connected with communities, listening to their stories, and witnessing resilience renews my energy and commitment. I also nurture my motivation by continuing to learn, collaborating with inspiring colleagues, and celebrating progress, even when it comes in small steps.

Challenges and setbacks are part of meaningful work. When progress is slow or outcomes fall short, I try to see these moments not as failures but as opportunities to learn and grow. Staying grounded in compassion and patience helps me move forward. I remind myself that sustainable change takes time, persistence, and trust-building.

What is your country doing to support and empower women?

Armenia has made meaningful progress in advancing women’s rights and empowerment, while still navigating cultural traditions and structural challenges. The country’s approach combines legal reforms, government policies, international partnerships, and grassroots movements that promote women’s participation, safety, health, and leadership.

Gender equality and anti-violence protections
  • Armenia has strengthened legislation and national action plans to prevent domestic violence and gender-based violence and improve victim protection.
  • A current Council of Europe–supported initiative (2025–2026) focuses on preventing violence against women and promoting gender equality, including digital safety.
Political participation
  • Gender quotas have increased women’s representation in parliament and decision-making roles (minimum targets introduced in recent reforms).
  • National policies encourage women’s participation in leadership and governance, aligning with global gender equality commitments.
  • Armenian civil society initiatives amplify women’s voices in peacebuilding and conflict recovery.
