Artificial Intelligence is influencing access to jobs, finance, healthcare, and information. When it learns from historical inequalities, it can reproduce them, making AI a women’s rights issue.
This paper by the Soroptimist International of Europe AI Task Force examines:
- how gender bias gets incorporated into AI
- how to detect them and minimise their impact
- and how equality can be embedded into its design from the very beginning.
The paper identifies five distinct forms of gender bias in AI systems and explores practical ways to measure and address them. It also introduces two original frameworks for making women’s contributions more visible in AI-generated content and embedding equality into AI systems from the outset. It concludes with concrete recommendations for Soroptimist International and its member clubs worldwide.
